The Book Escape from Beckyville

While pursuing my MFA in creative writing from Antioch University, I began experimenting with speculative fiction. My debut short story collection Escape from Beckyville: Tales of Race, Hair and Rage was born there and took on a life of its own after I graduated.

Taken from the book:

In Escape from Beckyville, FB Beckyville Newgo inside a futuristic Los Angeles where female wraiths prey on black women for their hair, southern maids possess superpowers and black women live in fear of being stopped by the Rage Patrol. In these ten twisted and provocative tales, Nicole D. Sconiers tackles issues of race in witty, haunting and terrifying ways.

Here’s what some smart women I admire are saying about the book:

“With sharp, strong strokes, Nicole Sconiers creates a surreal and all-too-real world in which a black woman can find herself trapped in a white body, get busted for anger or, if she feels like it, rent a programmable white dude. Sometimes sad, sometimes funny and often both, these are stories from a fresh new writer to watch. This Becky is most impressed!”
— Kit Reed, author of Weird Women, Wired Women and Thinner Than Thou

“Nicole Sconiers’ voice and vision lead, in these stories, to exciting, dangerous, adventurous, emotionally honest and true places, via her spunky and very alive characters. A writer who has come into her own.”
— Alma Luz Villanueva, author of The Ultraviolet Sky, winner of the American Book Award.
